Victoria Seals News Release
St. George, UT - Wrapping up a marathon 18-day road trip with game three against the St. George RoadRunners, the Victoria Seals returned to Bruce Hurst Field for the series finale on Wednesday night. Sending Andrew Arreola (4-4) to the mound for his sixth start of the year, the Seals faced Jon Dutton (3-5) on the hill for St. George.
Grabbing a lead in the top of the first inning, the Seals went up 2-0 when lead-off batter Wilver Perez was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and then scored with the help of a two-run blast from Terrence McClain.
Flexing their muscles in the second frame, Victoria added to their lead thanks to a double from Matt Kavanaugh followed by an RBI single from Dale Swinford. Then, after an overthrow from RoadRunners catcher Scott Clement allowed Swinford to score and Arreola to advance to third, a run-scoring base hit from Perez made it 5-0 Seals.
Before the frame was out, another St. George error and another stolen base from Perez set up an RBI base hit from McClain and a double off the bat of Tim Rodriguez to put the Seals ahead 7-0. Two batters later, the third error of the inning against the RoadRunners brought Rodriguez home and capped off a six-run frame for the visitors.
Adding another run in the third, a lead-off single from Swinford cashed in on an RBI single off the bat of McClain to put Victoria ahead 9-0. Responding to break the shutout in the bottom of the frame, the RoadRunners scored a pair of runs when a fielder's choice from Yosvany Almario scored a lead-off walk to Nick Spears and an RBI single from Jermy Acey made it 9-2 through three complete.
After Brian Rios led off the fourth with a solo home run to push the Seals into double digits, Victoria put the game away for good in the fifth. With Dale Swinford advancing to second after a lead-off single, a single from Perez and back-to-back doubles courtesy of McClain and Rodriguez put the Seals ahead 13-2. Then two straight singles from Colin Moro and Matt Kavanaugh kept the offense rolling, finally chasing the St. George starter from the game with Victoria ahead 15-2.
Clawing back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, the RoadRunners pulled the score to 15-6 when lead-off home run from Jermy Acey preceded a two-run single off the bat of Scott Clement, who later crossed home plate on the back of a single from C.J. Lang.
Rounding out their scoring in the top of the eighth inning, though, the Seals used a two-out single from Chris Van Rossum and a wild pitch from St. George reliever Bartolome Fortunato to score another pair, matching a franchise record with 17 runs on the night. Despite another RBI from Acey in the bottom of the eighth, the Seals cruised to a series win in St. George with a 17-7 victory at Bruce Hurst Field.
Andrew Arreola earned the win for the Seals, while Jon Dutton gave up 12 earned runs en route to his sixth loss of the season. A brilliant night at the plate for Terrence McClain, finishing 4-for-5 with five runs batted in, paced Victoria's offense, while Jermy Acey went a perfect 5-for-5 in a losing effort for the RoadRunners.
