Seven-Run Eighth Sends Cimarrones Packing
July 21, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals have gotten so skilled with their offence lately that they only needed one inning to score runs and beat the Tijuana Cimarrones on Wednesday.
The Caps scored all seven of their runs in the bottom of the eighth, and their pitching staff got the job done the rest of the way, resulting in a 7-0 victory for the home side. Edmonton outscored Tijuana 30-2 during the three-game series. They've now won five in a row to start the second half of the Golden Baseball League season, as well as a remarkable 18 of their last 19 games.
The game was an all-out pitchers' duel for seven and a half innings, as neither team could generate any offence. But the Caps exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single by left fielder Steve Brown. Catcher Nick Valdez also had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 and driving in a run.
The Caps got a huge effort from three members of their pitching staff, as starting hurler Mike Hyrnio threw six solid innings and scattered seven hits. Reliever Yosandy Ibanez came in and gave up just one hit over the next two innings, striking out four, while closer Chad Blackwell tossed a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.
After 12 consecutive games on their home diamond at TELUS Field, the Caps will finally head back on the road this weekend with a trip down the QE2 highway to Calgary. The Vipers are hosting Edmonton for a four-game set Friday through Monday, and it will be a battle of the top two teams in the North Division, as Calgary is 7-1 in the second half.
The series finale against the Cimarrones was another Sonic Wiener Wednesday at the ballpark, as Capital Dogs were on sale for just $2. And the next time the Caps play in Edmonton will also be a Wiener Wednesday, as they return home from their road trip to take on the Vipers. The teams play at TELUS next Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.
