Snakes Capture Seventh Straight

Falling behind 5-0 early the Calgary Vipers rallied to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 9-6 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. In the fifth inning the Vipers used a three-run homer from Julio Ramirez to tie the game and in the sixth Calgary scored three more times to take the lead. With the victory the Snakes sweep the three-game set with the Scorpions and won their seventh straight game overall. Record wise the Vipers improved to 7-1 on the second half and 30-21 overall on the Golden Baseball League season.

Ramirez led Calgary at the plate with four runs batted in, three hits, and two runs scored.

Jorge Vasquez was excellent out of the bullpen throwing two scoreless innings while striking out four. Claudio Galva (11) earned the save with pitching a scoreless ninth while Erik Dessau (4-2) received the win in pitching six innings and allowing six runs.

For the third straight game Yuma scored first as in the first inning Eric Scriven singled, Jonel Pacheco reached on a fielder's choice when catcher Luis Taveras dropped the baseball while applying a tag to Scriven, and both runners scored on a Mark Samuelson two-run double for a 2-0 lead.

The Scorpions scored again in the second frame when Walter Correa and Johny Celis singled, Ronny Malave sacrificed bunted a run in, and Celis and Malave scored for a 5-0 advantage when Erik Church shot a ground ball under the glove of first baseman Brent Metheny.

Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the second as Julio Ramirez singled, Drew Miller walked, Caonabo Cosme collected a base hit, and Ramirez scored for a 5-1 score when Jorge Mejia grounded into a double-play.

The Vipers scored a couple more tallies in the third inning when Erik Dessau doubled, Jonny Kaplan singled him home, Guillermo Reyes collected a base knock, Metheny walked to load the bases, and Miller hit a sacrifice fly for a 5-3 game.

Yuma got a run back in the fifth as Peeter Ramos doubled and scored on two passed balls for a 6-3 lead.

Calgary tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the frame when Kaplan reached on an error, Metheny singled, and Ramirez launched his 11th home run of the season.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Snakes captured their first lead at 9-6 as Taveras singled, Kaplan doubled, Metheny drove in two with a base hit, and Ramirez plated another with a single of his own.

Calgary now welcomes the Edmonton Capitals for a first-place showdown on Friday July 23rd at 7:05 PM MDT, Saturday July 24th and Sunday July 25th at 1:35 PM MDT, and Monday July 26th at 7:05 PM MDT for Paint the Park Pink weekend. On Saturday the Vipers will also host "Saskatchewan Shines! Rider Day at the Park".
