Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers gave up five homeruns on their way to losing 16-6 to the St. George RoadRunners at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah. The Snakes hit three big fly's of their own but it was not nearly enough against St. George's 17 hit attack. With the win the RoadRunners spilt the first four games of this five game series. The loss drops the first half North Division champion Vipers to 26-17 with just the back-half of this double-header remaining in the first half of the schedule.
The Vipers used an error in the top of the first inning to score the game's first runs. Carlos Duncan reached on a fielding error by third baseman Trevor Dimick and Felix Jose made the RoadRunners pay with his tenth homerun of the season for the 2-0 lead.
St. George responded in a huge way in the bottom of the inning starting with a walk to Ryan Stevenson, a Greg Lemon single, and a Claudio Arias three run shot for the lead. Cody Nowlin and Seth Loman followed with singles and due to an error by right fielder Darryl Brinkley, Nowlin scored. Dustin Hicks and Kory Wayment added to the lead with run batted in doubles and Stevenson capped the inning with a RBI base hit for the 7-2 advantage.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the third inning with a Loman triple, a Hicks RBI single, and a Stevenson two run blast. Following a Lemon single the homeruns continued to fly with Arias' second shot of the night for the 12-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Wiki Gonzalez walked and Loman nailed a two run homerun to push the RoadRunners lead to 14-2.
Calgary hit two long balls of their own in the next half inning with Jorge Mejia's sixth and Duncan's second of the season. Mejia was a three run shot with Colin Moro on with a single and pitcher Ryan Schurman earning a walk in his first plate appearance of the season. Duncan's meanwhile was a solo shot after he went back-to-back with Mejia for the 14-6 score.
Arias continued his excellent game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two run big fly for his third homerun of the game and the 16-6 advantage.
Vipers' starter Phil Sobkow (1-2) picked up his first loss in three appearances since joining the team.
In Game Two of this double-header Evan Greusel (6-1) will take to the mound.
