Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers wrapped up the first half of the season with a 13-4 loss to the St. George RoadRunners at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah. In the bottom of the third inning the RoadRunners exploded for nine tallies and went on to win by that same amount. The loss gives St. George a sweep of the double-header and also splits the now complete season series between the two teams with five victories a side. Calgary hits the midway point of the schedule as Golden Baseball League North Division first half champions with a 26-18 record and will compete in the playoffs come September.

Calgary once again got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning with Nelson Castro's fourth homerun of the season. Drew Miller followed with a single, Colin Moro reached on an error by third baseman Juan Serrano, and Darryl Brinkley made the score 2-0 with a run batted in base hit.

St. George quickly tied the game at two in the bottom of the inning with a Seth Loman single, Wiki Gonzalez reaching on a fielder's choice, a Dustin Hicks bloop single, and a Kory Wayment two run double.

Right back came the Snakes in the top of the third inning loading the bases with a Carlos Duncan walk, Felix Jose single, and Patrick Arlis reaching on a fielding error by center fielder Ryan Stevenson. Castro cashed a run with a RBI walk and Miller hit a sacrifice fly ball for the 4-2 lead.

The RoadRunners responded in a huge way in the bottom of the inning with nine runs to take a 11-4 advantage. Stevenson and Greg Lemon led off with singles and were followed by Claudio Arias and Cody Nowlin with RBI base hits. Loman smacked a RBI double, Gonzalez walked, Hicks picked up a RBI base knock, Wayment knocked in two more with a single, Stevenson plated a run with a double, and Arias capped the inning with a two run base hit.

Another two runs were added in the bottom of the sixth inning when Arias and Nowlin singled, Arias moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch, Gonzalez singled, and Nowlin scored when Hicks reached on a fielding error by second baseman Jorge Tang for the 13-4 lead.

Evan Greusel (6-2) has now lost his last two starts.

After a day off this road trip concludes and the second half of the season begins against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats Friday July 11th at 7:05 PM (MDT), Saturday July 12th at 7:05 PM (MDT), and Sunday July 13th at 1:35 PM (MDT).

On Tuesday July 15th Snakes' Manager Mike Busch will lead the 20-man Golden Baseball League All-Star squad as they take on the United League's All-Stars in a battle of two of the top independent leagues in San Angelo, Texas. Joining Busch from the Vipers will be ace and pitching coach Evan Greusel and left fielder Drew Miller. Veterans Darryl Brinkley and Felix Jose have received permission from the GBL to miss Tuesday's All-star game to rest minor injuries and allow younger players a chance to play in the game.

The Snakes return home to Foothills Stadium Friday July 18th at 7:05 PM (MDT) for "Paint the Park Pink" weekend. Friday's game will open a six day home stand which will feature seven games against the Chico Outlaws and the Yuma Scorpions.
