Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws broke open a close contest with a 10 run 7th inning and posted a club record 24 hits en route to a 19-6 victory over the Orange County Flyers Tuesday night at Nettleton Stadium...it marked the first time Chico had beaten the Flyers in eight tries this season and evened the three-game series at one win apiece.

Despite the record-setting offensive attack, Chico played catch-up most of the night - Orange County put a run on the board in the 1st inning when Mark Okano scored from second when Outlaws second baseman Eric Pringle threw the ball away trying to complete a double play. In the 3rd Jermy Acey belted a three-run homer off Chico starter Greg Bicknell to push the Flyers lead to 4-0, but the Outlaws came back to knot up the contest with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd (Steve Boggs singled home Matt Ceriani and scored on a Jose Valdez double) and two in the 4th (Lino Garcia knocked in Gabe Riley with a base hit to center and came home on a double play grounder). Orange County went up again in the 6th when Pat Breen led off the inning with his league-leading 16th homer of the year...but Chico made it a 5-5 game in the bottom of the 6th when Ceriani scored on a Jesse Kovacs sacrifice fly. In the top of the 7th Dave Bacani singled home Travon Jackson to put the Flyers back out in front 6-5.

The lead didn't last long as the Outlaws teed off on Orange County relievers Ezequiel Ruvelcaba and Monte Mansfield in the bottom of the 7th - Julian Benavidez led off his a long home run that just got inside the left field foul pole; Riley followed with a base hit and reached third on a sac bunt and a groundout. Chico then proceeded to punch out seven two-out hits - Ceriani's single to center plated Riley to give the Outlaws their first lead of the night...Eric Pringle followed with a base hit...then Boggs lined a single to left to knock in Ceriani to make the score 8-6. Kovacs singled home Pringle, then following a walk to Valdez to load the bases, Benavidez connected again, slamming a three-run double off the left field wall to push the Outlaws lead to six. Riley was then hit by a pitch to put two aboard, and Garcia launched a home run over the left field wall to cap off the 10 run inning and put Chico up 15-6. In the 8th the Outlaws combined three walks, two singles, a throwing error and a sacrifice fly to score four more runs and go up 19-6; reliever Ben Shockey then retired Orange County in order in the 9th to wrap up the Outlaws most lopsided victory of the season.

Bicknell (3-2) went seven innings and struck out seven to earn the victory, with Ruvelcaba (1-2) taking the loss. Benavidez and Garcia each drove in five runs on the night; every Outlaws starter had at least two hits with Boggs finishing 4-for-6 and Valdez, Riley, Garcia and Ceriani contributing three safeties apiece...the Flyers had just seven hits; Bacani leading the way by going 2-for-4. Tuesday's win improves Chico's record to 14-26 on the season...Orange County slipped to 25-13, but despite the loss the Flyers reduced their magic number for clinching the GBL' s South Division first half title to three thanks to Reno's 8-7 extra-inning victory. Left-hander Beau Hintz (0-1) will be on the mound for the Outlaws in Wednesday's series finale, with righty Andre Simpson (7-2) shooting for his league-leading eighth victory of the season. First pitch is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
