St. Joseph, MO - The Sioux Falls Canaries (14-30) woes at Phil Welch Stadium continued on Wednesday night when the team dropped a 2-1 decision to the St. Joe Blacksnakes (24-20). The Canaries are now 0-9 at Phil Welch Stadium this year.
The Blacksnakes took the lead in the second inning. Cody Nowlin reached on a fielding error by Chris Weber. Denver Kitch singled to advance Nowlin to third and Jimmy Mojica walked to load the bases. Scooter Jordan drew a two-out walk to score Nowlin for a 1-0 lead. With the walk, Jordan has now reached base in 42 consecutive games.
St. Joe added a run in the sixth. Kitch singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. A groundout by Mojica moved Kitch to third and a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jordan scored Kitch for a 2-0 lead.
The Canaries got on the board with a two-out rally in the eighth. With two away John Schmitz singled, Chris Hall doubled, and Angelo Fermin laid down a bunt single. The bunt single scored Schmitz, making it 2-1.
Jamie Tricoglou shut down the Canaries in the ninth to close out St. Joe's 2-1 win. The save was Tricoglou's fourth of the year. Evan Thomas (3-5) pitched seven innings of shutout baseball in getting the win. Alex Perez (0-1) took the loss in his debut for the Canaries. Perez allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits while walking seven and striking out three.
Bird Seeds: On Wednesday afternoon, the American Association denied the Canaries protest of Tuesday night's game.
