
Pelicans Sign Trio of Pitchers

Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pensacola Pelicans announce today the signing of rookie right-handed pitchers Chris Martin and Carl Scheafer and left-hander Bryan Luke.
Chris Martin joins the Pelicans from Wheaton College in Massachusetts where he went 7-2 with a 2.54 ERA in 71 innings of work. Opposing batters hit only .212 against him and struck out 52 times. He gave up only one homerun in 2006. He threw two complete game shutouts and combined for one in an eleven inning contest.
Martin has been a member of three NCAA Tournament teams and is among the top ten in Wheaton history in career wins (14), career strikeouts (126), and complete games (4). He was second on his team in wins and strikeouts last season and third in innings pitched.
A New York native, Carl Scheafer pitched at Benedictine College in Kansas and had a very successful season as a reliever. In 37.2 innings pitched, he earned a 5-2 record and picked up eight saves while striking out 24. He is third in career saves at Benedictine with 18 and second in fewest walks allowed in a career, giving out only 59 free passes in 165 innings of work.
In 2005, Scheafer was named to the Heart of America Athletic Conference All-Conference first team as a relief pitcher.
Bryan Luke, the lone lefty of the group, had an outstanding season at Mayville State in North Dakota where opposing batters hit only .138 against him. He finished the season with a 2.15 ERA with four wins and six saves in 58.2 innings pitched. He gave up only 14 earned runs, struck out 68 and walked only 18.
The Pelicans are in the midst of their Northern Division swing against the St. Paul Saints and the St. Joe Blacksnakes. Pensacola returns home on Tuesday, July 4th to face the Sioux Falls Canaries for a three-game series.
