
Smokies Win Sixth Straight; Nippert Complete Game Shutout, 2-0 Tennessee

Birmingham, Ala.- Dustin Nippert tossed a complete game shutout as the Smokies won their sixth straight game with a 2-0 victory at Birmingham Tuesday night.
Nippert (3-1) struck out a season high nine batters, including the last two of the night with the tying run on first. The right-hander held the Barons scoreless on five hits.
Tennessee struck early, when first inning doubles from Jarred Ball and Jesus Cota put the Smokies ahead 1-0.
The Smokies scored again in the third inning. Noochie Varner stroked a leadoff double to left field against starter Nik Lubisich (7-4). Jarred Ball's bunt single was thrown away by second baseman Antoin Gray, scoring Varner from third.
Nippert needed 109 pitches to blank the Barons, allowing two baserunners in an inning only twice.
The series finale is Wednesday at noon ET. RHP Tony Pena (1-6, 6.11) will start for Tennessee against RHP Sean Tracey (6-2, 3.92).
