Lerew leads Braves over Lookouts

June 14, 2005 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release

Anthony Lerew (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR) dominated the Lookouts for five innings before making one bad pitch in the sixth, that Stephen Smitherman deposited on the berm in left-center field. Lerew is the first Braves pitcher to win four consecutive games and the first Braves pitcher to record six wins.

The game was rather uneventful until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Braves jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Jeff Francoeur battled back from an 0-2 count to lead off the inning with a walk. Wes Timmons then drew a walk and Iker Franco followed with his first homer of the year, a three run blast giving Mississippi a 3-0 lead.

The Lookouts cut Mississippi's lead to one in the sixth with a two-run homer by Stephen Smitherman. D'Angelo Jimenez walked and Smitherman ripped his second homer of 2005 making the score 3-2.

Chattanooga threatened to tie the game in the eighth when Junior Ruiz singled. Ruiz moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jeff Bannon and moved to third on a ground out by Jimenez. Braves' reliever Steve Kent got out of the jam by getting Kevin Howard to ground out to shortstop Luis Hernandez.

The Lookouts threatened again in the ninth, but Kent (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) slammed the door again to record his first save of the year.

The Braves and the Lookouts will play the final game of this three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Trustmark Park. Mississippi will send Matt Coenen (2-3, 4.01) to the mound. Chattanooga will counter with righty Josh Hall (1-1, 3.68).
