Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- The Jacksonville Suns tattered the Carolina Mudcats pitching staff for the fifth straight day, dropping the Mudcats to their fifth straight loss, an 11-5 defeat on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium.
With the defeat, the Mudcats fell two games behind first-place West Tenn with five games to play in the first half in the Northern Division. West Tenn defeated Huntsville 2-1 on the road Tuesday night.
The Suns punished the Mudcats for a pair of four-run innings in the fourth and fifth, on the heels of a three-run second against Carolina starter Scott Olsen (L, 5-4). The Suns blasted a pair of homers in the fourth against Olsen in the fourth, including a three-run shot by Todd Donovan sent the lead to 7-0. On the next pitch, Olsen threw behind Jon Weber, who homered twice on Monday night. Weber took two steps toward Olsen as both benches cleared. Weber had to be restrained by his manager John Shoemaker as the teams came together. When order was restored, both Olsen and Weber were ejected.
Trailing 11-1 in the fifth, Carolina (40-23) scored the game's final four runs. James Shanks, who tripled in a run in the fifth, also homered in the ninth. Robert Andino went 3-3 with a sacrifice fly to plate Shanks in the fifth. JC Muniz swatted a homer in the sixth.
Down 11-4 in the seventh, the Mudcats filled the bases with two outs against reliever Jason Olson, but Muniz fouled out to the catcher.
Olsen worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, fanning five. Ryan Baker pitched 1 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on three hits. Mike McNutt and Ross Wolf each worked two scoreless innings.
Yorman Bazardo (4-4, 3.97) will start the final game of the seven-game series with the Suns Wednesday night at Five County Stadium. Eric Hull (4-3, 2.87) will oppose for the Suns.
