Braves can't stop Lookouts' bats

Braves' starter Roman Colon (2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), recently assigned to Mississippi from Atlanta, threw 2.2 innings allowing one run before giving way to Matt Wright. Wright (4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) could not hold down the Chattanooga offense as he fell to 5-6 on the year. For the Lookouts, starter Ben Kozlowski (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) improved to 4-1 on the year. Former Braves' pitcher Bubba Nelson allowed one unearned run through two innings to record his ninth save of 2005.

Mississippi made the score 1-0 in the second when Wes Timmons was hit by a pitch for the 15th time this year. He moved to third on a single by Iker Franco and scored when Jonathan Schuerholz grounded out to third.

The Lookouts came back with four runs in the top of the third. Six consecutive runners reached base on five hits and a walk. Pitcher Ben Kozlowski walked and scored on a single by D'Angelo Jimenez. Jimenez scored on a double by Jeff Bannon. Bannon scored on a single by Smitherman. Bannon then scored on a single by Rick Asadoorian making the score 4-1 Lookouts.

Chattanooga extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth when, with two outs, Asadoorian tripled to left and scored on a fielding error by third baseman Wes Timmons.

Mississippi came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Gregor Blanco hit a swinging bunt over shortstop Gary Patchett's head for a single. Onil Joseph then doubled to bring up Jeff Francoeur with two runners in scoring position. Francoeur doubled to left plating Blanco and Joseph cutting the Lookouts' lead to 5-3.

Chattanooga responded with a run in the sixth to give the Braves a three-run deficit at 6-3. Junior Ruiz led off with a single and back-to-back walks to Jimenez and Bannon loaded the bases. Smitherman then grounded out 4-3 and Ruiz scored making the score 6-3.

The Braves cut the lead to 6-4 in the eighth when, with two outs, Wes Timmons reached on an error by third baseman Jeff Bannon. Timmons then scored on a single by Iker Franco to cut the deficit to two runs.

Mississippi was unable to get any closer as former Braves farmhand Bubba Nelson came on and slammed the door to keep the score 6-4.

The Braves and the Lookouts will play game two of this three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Trustmark Park. Mississippi will send Anthony Lerew (5-2, 4.18) to the mound in search of his team-high sixth win of the year. Chattanooga will counter with lefty Lance Caraccioli (5-4, 3.78).

Braves Bites:

Wes Timmons is tied for the minor league lead after being hit by a pitch for the 15th time this season . . . Timmons now ranks third in the league with 43 runs scored.

Jeff Francoeur ranks second in the SL with 21 doubles on the year . . . he also has 49 RBI on the year, third in the SL.

DOUBLEHEADER THURSDAY

The Braves and the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx were rained out Sunday, June 12. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader this Thursday, June 16 at Trustmark Park. Fans that have or buy tickets to the originally scheduled game on Thursday will get to see both seven-inning games for the price of one. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 6:05 pm. Fans are encouraged to come early and stay late for an extra game of Mississippi Braves baseball.
