GARY, IN - The Wichita Wingnuts (4-3) defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats (4-3) 5-1 at U.S. Steel Yard on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wingnuts scored four runs before an out was recorded in the top of the first inning. Ryan Khoury was hit by a pitch leading off the game and went to third on Jake Kahaulelio's single through the right side. John Rodriguez followed with a single through the middle that scored Khoury with the game's first run. C.J. Ziegler caped the rally with a line drive three-run home run off the bottom of the scoreboard in left-center field.
In the top of the fourth, Derek Perren drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a hit-and-run groundball from Stephen Yoo. Jared McDonald drove in Perren with a sacrifice fly to left that made it 5-0 Wichita.
The RailCats got on the board against Wingnuts' starter Chris Smith in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Massaro singled to right with two outs and scored from first on Cristian Guerrero's bloop double down the right field line.
Gary SouthShore loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Lincoln Holdzkom retired Ryan Babineau on a flyball to right field to escape the jam.
Josh Dew worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to close out the game.
