Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The second game of Wednesday's doubleheader resulted in a 5-0 loss for the Sox in a seven-inning game which lasted one hour and fifty-seven minutes. Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium hosted 1,460 to see the Sox drop their fourth straight on the season.
The Goldeyes scored in the first inning with hits from Leonard Davis and Josh Mazzola which set up the two-RBI single by Ryan Scoma to make it 2-0. Sox center fielder led off the bottom of the inning with a single but got doubled up on a routine pop up to right field. The Sox reached second base in the third inning but would not visit scoring position thereafter.
Sox starter, Joe Newby calmed down after the first to strike out seven batters through five innings. In the fourth, Newby walked two Goldeyes and hit another to eventually load the bases. A passed ball allowed the third run of the game and then in the fifth, Davis took Newby yard to make it 4-0 after five innings played.
Freddy Flores came in relief of Newby in the sixth to load the bases, only to get out of the jam by striking out Davis. In the seventh, designated hitter Cory Patton came in to pitch and allowed a run on one hit, one error, and a hit batter.
Winnipeg's relief featured Brenden Lafferty and Wes Alsup who both kept the Sox scoreless in a combined two innings. Lafferty's sixth inning gave up no run on no hits with a strikeout while Alsup's seventh inning rendered three strikeouts and a groundout with no hits.
Alex Capaul (W, 1-0) threw for five and allowed no runs on four hits while walking one and striking out four. Joe Newby (L, 0-1) allowed four earned runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Flores gave up two hits, no runs with a walk and a strikeout. Patton struck out one while allowing an unearned run on one hit.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 3-4 while the Goldeyes remain undefeated at 6-0 on the season and atop the north division. Thursday, the Sox host Grand Prairie for the start of a three-game series.
