Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - In a game that lasted two hours and ten minutes, the Sox fell to the Goldeyes of Winnipeg, 2-1 in the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader. Starters Jason Johnson and Matt Rusch provided pitching that kept the score to a minimal margin at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. The seven inning game went eight as the Goldeyes scored in the final inning.
Sox starter, Jason Johnson managed to get out of an early jam in which Nick Liles doubled and was left stranded at third to end the first inning. In the home half of the first, KC Serna tripled and would score off a throwing error by Goldeye catcher, Luis Allen. Offensively, the Sox would only get three more hits in the game as Matt Rusch pitched through the seventh.
Defensively, Amarillo turned four double plays, three of them for starter, Johnson and one for reliever, Erik Draxton, after he walked the first batter of the seventh. Winnipeg committed two errors in the first inning but would be solid after that. Although the Goldeyes had seven hits, three of them stayed in the infield and three of them came in the sixth inning, which was when the score became tied, 1-1 off a Liles RBI single.
After Draxton pitched a complete seventh, he walked the first batter of the eighth and was replaced by John Holdzkom, who allowed the go-ahead single to Fehlandt Lentini. Joe Testa would record the third out of the eighth for the Sox. In the home half of the eighth, Patrick Keating was brought on for the Goldeyes and struck out three batters to secure the win. The Sox put two on the corners with two outs but David Peralta was left looking at the last strike of the game.
John Holdzkom (L, 0-1) went two-thirds of an inning allowing one run on one hit while Patrick Keating (W, 1-0) went an inning, giving up two hits. Rusch, for the Goldeyes, went seven and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Johnson pitched for six innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out one and walking none.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 3-3 while the Goldeyes stay undefeated at 5-0 on the season. Tonight, the Sox take on Winnipeg for the third of their three game series, and second of a doubleheader. The game is set to begin at 8:00pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show at 7:55pm on Ustream via www.amarillosox.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
