Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Zach Smith set the Coastal Plain League's single season record for total bases, as the Columbia Blowfish (9-14; 18-33) defeated the Florence RedWolves (9-12; 24-25) 6-5 in 10 innings at American Legion Field on Thursday night.
Smith broke the record on a RBI single in the first inning, off RedWolves' starting pitcher Adam Camara. Smith now has 122 total bases this season. The record was previously held by Jason Dubois (Rocky Mount, 1998) and Kevin Mahoney (Forest City, 2008), who each had 121 total bases in a season.
The Blowfish added two more runs in the top of the first inning on a RBI ground out by Rob Harding and Carlos Santana scoring on a passed ball by Joshua Miller to take a 3-0 lead.
Blowfish starting pitcher Josh Adams shut down the RedWolves' offense through the first four innings, giving up only one hit and striking out three.
The Blowfish scored again in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI single by Santana off RedWolves' relief pitcher Ruben Tresgallo, scoring Tyler Jackson, to go up 4-0.
The RedWolves got to Adams in the bottom of the fifth inning. Michael Wilson scored on a wild pitch by Adams. With two runners on, Tony Micklon hit his seventh home run of the season to tie the game, 4-4.
In five innings, Adams gave up four runs on three hits, walked no one and struck out four.
The Blowfish bullpen shut down the RedWolves from the sixth through the ninth innings. Alex Brooks, Gabe Grammer, Greg Harrison, and Jeff Murray allowed only two players to reach base in the four innings.
The RedWolves' bullpen matched Columbia's pitching staff. Mitchell Knox, Jacob Matthews, and Walker McKinven teamed up to only allow two players to reach base between the sixth and ninth innings, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the tenth inning, McKinven (2-3) gave up a single to Harding and Carlos Santana reached on an error by Wil Leathers. A wild pitch by McKinven advanced Harding and Santana to second and third base. RedWolves' catcher Joshua Miller gave up two passed balls, allowing the two runners to score, giving the Blowfish a 6-4 lead.
The RedWolves fought back in the bottom of the tenth inning against Harrison (1-2). The first three batters of the inning reached base for Florence. Shane Basen scored on a throwing error by Harrison, cutting the Blowfish lead to 6-5.
Harrison followed by striking out Travis Benn with runners at first and third base. Blake Barber grounded into a fielder's choice, as Tyler Jackson threw out Miller at home plate. Chris Williams ended the game by grounding out to Santana at third base.
The Blowfish have Friday off, while the RedWolves will play in a doubleheader against the Wilmington Sharks.
