Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs moved one win closer to clinching homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs with a 9-5 win over the Wilmington Sharks at Buck Hardee Field on Thursday night.
Fayetteville (30-20, 13-9) has now won three straight after losing six of seven. They moved to within three games of guaranteeing themselves two games at J.P. Riddle Stadium in the Petitt Cup Best-of-3 Quarterfinals.
Alex Belew (2-2) pitched five innings to earn his second win of the season. He allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits while walking just two and striking out five. Jimmie Davis, Mike Hebert, and Cory Kent combined to finish off the victory with four innings of solid relief.
Wilmington (24-25, 11-10) hurt their own cause, as four Sharks pitchers combined to walk eight SwampDogs and hit two more. The SwampDogs also stole seven bases - two each by John Hogan, Sam Morgan, and K.C. Weber, and one by Brandon Napier.
Tommy Houmard (1-1) started the game for Wilmington, but did not make it out of the second inning before being replaced by Tyler Deloach. Neither could find the strike zone consistently against the SwampDogs offense, which made the most of the opportunities given.
Hogan went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Joe Vaskas managed to pick up two RBI's without a hit, earning both on groundball outs. Danny Gesick also had a big night, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, a walk, and an RBI.
Weber, making his first start of the season for Fayetteville behind the plate, went 1-for-3 and scored twice, and Cody Hudson and Sal Giardina each had an RBI.
The SwampDogs return home to host Morehead City on Friday. It's Family Fun Night at "The Swamp," and the first 500 fans through the gates will receive the latest edition Fun-Go bobblehead, presented by Lumbee River EMC. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
