Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Will Smith and the Cedar Rapids Kernels needed only an hour and forty-six minutes to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Smith (2-1) allowed just five hits and struck out six over eight innings and Mike Kohn came on and struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.
The Kernels scored the only run of the game in the third inning on an RBI single by Tyson Auer to score Ryan Groth. Groth finished the game 2 for 3 with two double and Auer was 2 for 4.
Lansing starter Henderson Alvarez (4-4) was the tough luck loser, allowing a run on five hits and striking out four over seven innings.
It's believed today's game is the fastest 9-inning game played at Veterans Memorial Stadium since the stadium opened in April of 2002.

It's Pepsi Prize Day at the stadium and you could win one of many prizes that will be given away during the game including nights in the Pepsi Diamond Suite for future Kernels games. Gates open at 1:00 pm.
