CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Will Smith hurled eight shutout innings to outduel Henderson Alvarez and the Cedar Rapids Kernels (23-20) eked out a 1-0 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (14-27) in an hour and 46 minutes on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Tyson Auer's two-out RBI bunt single in the third inning provided the difference in the ballgame, the shortest in duration for both Lansing and Cedar Rapids in 2009.

Smith (2-1) scattered five hits, two by Balbino Fuenmayor, while striking out six and walking none in earning the victory. He helped his own cause by picking off Tyler Pastornicky in the seventh inning and was assisted when Yohermyn Chavez was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double in the eighth.

Alvarez (4-4) lasted seven innings, similarly allowing five hits while walking none and striking out four batters. The 19 year-old has allowed just five earned runs in 34.0 innings in the month of May.

Mike Kohn struck out the side in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

The Lugnuts and Kernels will wrap up their three-game series on Monday at 3:05 p.m. EDT at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Left-hander Manuel Flores (2-2, 2.05) will start for Cedar Rapids. The Lugnuts' starter is yet to be announced.
