Kane County Cougars News Release

Trailing 5-2 after five innings, the Kane County Cougars rallied for four late runs Sunday night and came back to beat the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-5, in front of 5,946 at Elfstrom Stadium. The three-game series between the Midwest League's two first-place teams is now even at one win apiece, and the Cougars are 3-2 on their six-game home stand.

The Cougars scored first with a two-run second against Mark Sorensen. Grant Desme doubled home Steve Kleen and then scored on a single by Petey Paramore. The 'Caps battled back with one run in the third against Brett Hunter and four more in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Hunter allowed five runs on three hits and walked six over 2 2/3 innings. He left in line for a loss but ended with a no-decision.

Kleen singled in Dusty Coleman in the sixth to cut it to 5-3. After Matt Ray poked a game-tying two-run single off Erik Crichton in the seventh, Coleman, who had four hits, doubled in the eighth and later scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Grant Desme. The rally handed Matt Fitts (1-5) the victory, and Luis Sanz (0-1) took the loss. Fitts pitched 4 1/3 innings of four-hit shutout relief with no walks and four strikeouts, and Mickey Storey pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.

The Cougars (26-17) and Whitecaps (28-14) conclude their three-game series Monday afternoon at 1 CDT when Anthony Capra (0-3, 4.21) faces Luke Putkonen (3-1, 2.61). It will also end the Cougars' long home stretch, as the club commences a 10-game road trip Tuesday.
