Somerset Patriots News Release
Bowie, MD - The Somerset Patriots (69-44) slugged four home runs in a 13-3 victory over the Bowie Baysox (56-58) at Prince George's Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Patriots scored in seven out of nine innings in the game, including four straight innings with a home run, by four different players off of four different pitchers.
Andres Chaparro (13), Austin Wells (6), Jesus Bastidas (15) and Anthony Volpe (17) went deep in the fourth through seventh innings, respectively, to bash the Baysox for 13 total runs.
The 13 runs are the Patriots' second-most in a game this season, while their 10-run margin of victory was their second-largest in a game.
Yankees top prospect Anthony Volpe finished the game a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored (67), two RBI (56), a home run (17), a triple (2), a walk (55) and two stolen bases (42).
Volpe now ranks second in the league in runs, stolen bases and extra-base hits, while leading the team in those categories, as well as RBI and home runs.
He opened up the scoring in the game in the first inning by drawing a full count walk, then proceeded to steal second and third and score on a wild pitch. The play marked the fifth time this season that Volpe scored on a wild pitch.
Elijah Dunham added an RBI-single that opened up a 2-0 lead. Dunham later walked in the game, ensuring a walk in all six games of Somerset's series in Bowie (nine total).
Volpe's triple extended the lead to 3-0, before Mickey Gasper drilled an RBI-single to make the score 4-0 Somerset after four innings.
Austin Wells came home on an error that opened up the scoring in a four-run fifth inning. Chaparro capped the scoring in that inning with a three-run homer that made it 8-0 Somerset.
Wells added a three-run homer one inning later, while Bastidas and Volpe both tacked on solo shots in the sixth and seventh innings.
Bowie scored its only three runs on home runs by Maverick Handley (10) and Andrew Daschbach (10) in the fifth and ninth innings, respectively.
Giancarlo Stanton went 0-for-4 in the second game of his rehab assignment with the Patriots.
The victory secured a series split for Somerset, ahead of a six-game home series vs. the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
The 2022 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Tuesday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at TD Bank Ballpark.
Fans can follow the action live as Steven Cusumano calls the play-by-play on MiLB.tv and FOX Sports New Jersey 93.5 FM | 1450 AM, the Flagship Station for Patriots Baseball, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m.
