Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (15-29 ,43-70) held off the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond, to split the six-game series.
Binghamton got off to a quick start as Wyatt Young hit the first pitch of the game to left field for a leadoff double against Landen Roupp (0-1). The next batter Rowdey Jordan drove him home with an RBI single to put the Ponies up 1-0. Later in the frame, Carlos Cortes added a sacrifice groundout to make it 2-0.
The Ponies added a pair of runs in the fifth, as Nic Gaddis drove a solo home run over the left field wall to lead off the frame to make it 3-0. It's Gaddis first home run of his Double-A career. Then with Matt Winaker on second and two out, Ronny Mauricio lined an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0.
Richmond (15-29, 55-58) would claw back with runs in the fifth and seventh, but Carlos Cortes belted a two-run homer to left in the eighth giving the Rumble Ponies a 6-2 lead. Richmond though did not go away quietly, as Jacob Heyward responded with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, Grant Hartwig allowed a run, but with runners on the corners and two out, Casey Schmitt grounded into a force out with Mauricio throwing to Wyatt Young at second to end the game. It's Hartwig's second save of the season and he is now 12 for 12 in save opportunities across three levels this year.
Ponies starter Jesus Vargas allowed just one hit over four innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Garrison Bryant (3-1) picked up his second win of the week as he allowed two runs over two and two thirds innings in relief.
The Rumble Ponies are off on Monday and then continue their 12-game road trip at FirstEnergy Stadium on Tuesday night as they open up a six-game series against the Reading Fightin Phils. First pitch is at 7:00 PM and pregame coverage starts at 6:45 PM.
Postgame Notes: Mauricio finished 2-4 with two runs scored...Cortes drove in three runs...Young extended his on-base streak to 27 games.
