Everett Silvertips News Release
PORTLAND, OR - The Everett Silvertips turned a three-goal first period deficit into a one-goal game in the third period before submitting to the Portland Winterhawks 6-3 in their fifth game in seven days Tuesday night at Memorial Coliseum. Despite dropping their last meeting of the season with the first-place Winterhawks, the Silvertips remain tied with Seattle for seventh place in the Western Conference standings.
Landon Oslanski scored two powerplay goals for the Silvertips, with Mirco Mueller drawing assists on both. Ryan Harrison's third-period score then brought Everett within one at 4-3 before Portland answered just 21 seconds later to regain the multi-goal advantage. The 'Tips outshot the 'Hawks 26-24 over the final two periods, but were outshot 45-34 in total after a rough first period.
Shots were even in the opening minutes of the contest, but Portland began to build momentum as the first period progressed. Chase De Leo started the scoring at 7:27, squeezing a shot through Daniel Cotton's five-hole to finish off a 2-on-1 rush for the 'Hawks. Seth Jones followed just over one minute later, rushing the puck into the zone and rifling a wrist shot into the top corner to make it 2-0. Jones scored on a similar shot with 1.1 seconds left in the period, cutting across the slot and again finding the top shelf to give the Winterhawks a 3-0 edge.
The teams played each other closely throughout a tighter-checking second period, with each totaling eight shots on goal. The Silvertips had two unsuccessful powerplays and the Winterhawks had one before a tripping call on Portland's Derrick Pouliot put Everett back on the man-advantage late in the period. With Reid Petryk setting a screen in front of Mac Carruth, Landon Oslanski wristed a shot over the shoulder of the 'Hawks netminder from the right boards to bring the 'Tips back within 3-1 after two periods.
Nic Petan went coast-to-coast to extend the Portland lead early in the third, circling the Everett net before putting a wrister inside the near post to make it 4-1. Oslanski's second powerplay goal came just minutes later as he sent three consecutive shots to the net before the third slipped in along the ice. The 'Tips then drew within one at 12:53 after Tyler Sandhu and Josh Winquist teamed to feed Ryan Harrison, who backhanded home his tenth goal of the year.
Unfortunately for Everett, the Winterhawks answered on the next shift with Ty Rattie pushing a Brendan Leipsic pass around Cotton and in to put Portland on top 5-3. The Silvertips tested Carruth during an extended two-man advantage in the final minutes, but couldn't draw closer before Rattie's empty-net goal sealed the 'Hawks 6-3 victory.
Daniel Cotton (9-19-0-2) stopped 37 shots in defeat, while Austin Lotz made three saves during a brief appearance when Cotton was shaken up on a third-period collision. Mac Carruth (29-7-0-2) finished the night with 31 saves for Portland. The Silvertips finished 2 for 8 on the powerplay against the league's top penalty killing unit, while the Winterhawks missed on both of their opportunities.
The Silvertips continue a five-game road swing with two more U.S. Division games this weekend. Everett makes its final visit to Spokane on Friday to meet the Chiefs at 7:05 pm and then visits the ShoWare Center in Kent for one more key matchup with the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night at 7:05. The 'Tips return to conclude the regular season with back-to-back home games on March 16 and 17.
