Reading Fightin Phils News Release

Reading, PA -- Twenty-year-old right-hander Michael Bowden and two relievers kept the Phillies off-balance most of the way in Portland's 5-3 victory Friday night before 6,786 in the Eastern League.

Bowden, the No. 4 prospect in the Red Sox system, was brilliant in his Double-A debut. The right-hander retired the first 11 batters he faced before walking Pedro Swann. Swann stole second base and scored on Jason Hill's flare to right that fell among three fielders for the Phillies' first hit.

Bowden allowed two hits over five innings, with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Phillies (20-19) touched Chris Smith and Mike James for two runs and six hits over the last four innings, one of them Greg Jacobs' fifth homer in the ninth.

Bubba Nelson (2-1), making his second straight start for the Phillies after opening the season in the bullpen, allowed two runs over five innings.

Philadelphia right-hander Ryan Madson, on a Major League rehab assignment, pitched a scoreless sixth inning. He struck out two. He threw 10 strikes among his 16 pitches.

Five Sea Dogs knocked in a run apiece, a two-run eighth inning breaking open a one-run game. Bryan Pritz was 3-for-4 for the Dogs (17-17) and scored two runs.
