Sliders Comeback Runs Short

The Midwest Sliders almost pulled off their second straight ninth inning comeback but lost 11-9 to the Gateway Grizzlies. Sliders scored three in the ninth, left the bases loaded, and tying run on second base to end the game.

The Sliders struck first in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs. Robbie Knapp hit a RBI single, and Gilberto Zayas drove in a run on a fielders' choice.

Gateway came right back scoring six runs, off six hits in the second inning making the score 6-2. Two home runs by Stephen Holdren and Jareck West highlighted the Grizzlies scoring.

The Sliders scored twice, cutting the lead to 6-4 in the fourth on three hits. Knapp and Jimmy Baker hit back-to-back doubles that plated both runs.

Ten batters hit for Gateway in the fifth as they broke the game open, scoring five runs making it 11-4. Stephen Holdren hit his second homer of the game, followed by another homer by Charlie Lisk.

Sliders got the rally going in the ninth off three walks, a single, double, and hit by pitch. With two outs the Sliders had the winning run on first base, and tying run on second base, but flew out to end the game.

Kyle Kearcher suffered the loss for Midwest throwing 1.2 innings allowing six runs. Paige Dumont got he win, and Eric Ridener received the save for Gateway.

Midwest actually outhit the Grizzlies 16-13, but timely hitting and four homers proved to be the key for Gateway's victory.

Baker, Roberto Mena, and James Albury will now head to Rockford, Ill. for the Frontier League All Star game. The rest of the Sliders will take a four day break before facing River City Rascals in Missouri on Friday, July 17th.
