River City Rascals News Release
AVON, OH - The Rascals concluded a very successful first half with a 3-1 victory over the Crushers in front of 3,496 at All Pro Freight Stadium Sunday night to complete the three game sweep. It was the seventh sweep for River City in the first half of the season.
The Rascals (30-17) rode the left arm of Jake Laber (6-2) and added a couple of timely hits in the victory. River City started the scoring in the second inning. Joe Chavarria led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by pitcher, Jorge Charry (0-2). After a Kevin Reynolds groundout, Chavarria scored from third on an RBI single by JoJo Batten.
River City plated two more in the fifth off Charry, with a couple of fireworks in the frame as well. Chavarria was hit by a pitch and moved up to second on a balk by Charry. Lake Erie manager, John Massarelli, was ejected for arguing the balk call. Reynolds reached on an error and Chavarria scored on a wild pitch with Batten at the plate for a 2-0 lead. Charry then hit Batten with the next pitch, with the benches clearing after words were exchanged by both teams. Both benches were warned and Scott Robinson knocked in Reynolds from second for his second hit of the game.
The Crushers (25-22) did muster a run in the seventh against Laber, scoring on a single by Tim Binkoski to make it 3-1. Lake Erie had their best opportunity in the fourth, loading the bases with nobody out. Luke Hetherington hit into a fielder's choice, with Robinson throwing home to cut down the run. Gordon Gronkowski then hit into a double play to Ryan Wehrle at third, who stepped on the bag and threw to first.
Laber went seven innings for the win, allowing one run on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Jake Edwards earned his first save of the season, going the final two frames. Edwards surrendered only one hit and walked one.
Robinson finished 2-3 with his 39th RBI of the season while Pete Paris was aboard three times with two walks and a single.
The Rascals head into the All-Star break with a Frontier League best 30-17 record and in first place in the West Division. River City is off until Friday, July 17th when the Midwest Sliders head to T.R. Hughes Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
