July 12, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Rockford RiverHawks will head home for the all-star break as the hottest team in the Frontier League.
The RiverHawks rallied for an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning on Sunday and completed a three-game series sweep with a 2-1 win at Kalamazoo. Rockford has won six straight games and 11 of its last 12, including three series sweeps.
Rockford never trailed in its sweep of Kalamazoo. Todd Martin led off the second inning with a home run to left field. That lead stood until the eighth inning, when Tim Brown hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
In the top of the 10th, Doug Sanders led off with a double, moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Carson Bryant (0-1). Slava Vasilyev struck out two and retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to earn his first professional save.
Rockford closer John Muller (2-3) retired all five batters he faced to win in relief.
Neither starting pitcher was involved in the decision. Tanner Watson shut out the Kings on three hits over seven innings. Bernard Robert scattered eight hits over 8 1/3 innings.
Jason James was 1-for-4 with an intentional walk and extended his hitting streak to 38 games.
The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star celebration this week at Road Ranger Stadium. The Jim Beam Cubs/White Sox Legends Game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday. The All-Star Home Run Derby immediately follows. The 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.
