Slammers Swept by Crushers

Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- The Lake Erie Crushers completed their sweep of the Slammers Sunday afternoon in a tight 2-1 contest, handing Joliet their sixth straight loss. It marks the second straight series they have been swept, dating back to their three-gamer at Traverse City.

Starting pitching was stellar for both squads, but Joliet's Jim Schult allowed the game's first run in the third inning when Adrian Ortiz launched a solo home run deep to right field, giving Lake Erie the 1-0 lead. They would strike again in the fifth off an RBI single from Brian Erie for the insurance run.

The Slammers struck back in the seventh to cut the lead in half. After a pair of walks to lead off the inning, Matt Mirabal laced a run-scoring single into the outfield to make it 2-1. But Crushers pitching escaped the inning and forced Joliet to strand runners in scoring position in the eighth inning, as well, stopping the comeback in its tracks.

Jim Schult threw a gem for Joliet, going nearly seven innings on just two runs while striking out three. Geoff Brown tossed near-perfect relief on just one hit. Eric Gonzales-Diaz earned the win for Lake Erie, and at one point set down 13 straight Slammers.

After Monday's off-day, Joliet hits the road for a three-game series in Florence. Fans can listen to the game on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse calling the action.
