August 19, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-48) vs. LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS (47-36)
Sunday, August 19 - 2:05 p.m. CT
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #84 - Home Game #45 (35-48), (18-26)
RHP #28 Jim Schult (5-6, 5.07 ERA) vs. RHP #31 Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (6-7, 4.50 ERA)
Last time out.
Joliet lost 10-2 last night. Russell Moldenhauer went deep off Slammers starter Matt Sommo to make it 3-0 early on. They scored three more in the second off a two-RBI single by J.C. Figueroa and a double from Daniel Bowman. Joliet battled back in the home half when Kyle Maunus ripped a deep drive to left for a solo home run to put the game within five. But the Crushers continued to pound Joliet's pitching and scored a run in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings for a 10-1 advantage. The Slammers added one more run in the bottom of the ninth. Abel Nieves slapped a leadoff double into the gap, advanced to third, and came around on a groundout by Maunus. Matt Sommo made the start for Joliet on his birthday and surrendered six runs through the first two innings, and was stuck with the loss. Mike Barsotti, Rey Cotilla, and Brian Smith all threw in relief to complete the effort.
For Starters.
Jim Schult is coming off a rough outing on August 14 against the Traverse City Beach Bums as he took the loss in a game where he gave up seven runs on seven hits in five innings of work. He started the year in the bullpen with Joliet but has since moved to the starting rotation. This is his 13th start of the season and he leads the Slammers with 83 strike outs in 87 innings. Schult brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the New York Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season.
Movin' on up!
The Slammers announced the sale of RHP Daniel Carela and RHP Amalio Diaz's contracts to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization today. They become the fifth and sixth Slammers signed to affiliated baseball since the team's inception in May of 2011. Other Slammers in affiliated baseball include LHP Aaron Dott (Yankees), RHP Ryan Quigley (Padres), RHP Chris Pack (Diamondbacks) and RHP Gaby Hernandez (Diamondbacks). Carela went 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 36 appearances out of the bullpen. He struck out 41 batters in 36 innings. Diaz recorded 19 saves in 22 attempts. He was 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA in 34 appearances. His 19 saves were second in the Frontier League as of today.
Losing streak.
The Slammers are currently on a five-game losing streak, matching their longest losing streak in franchise history.
Home woes.
Joliet is 18-26 this season at home, the worst record in the Frontier League.
Workhorse.
Rookie left-hander Geoff Brown continues to have an impressive season as he made his league-leading 41st appearance of the season out of the bullpen Friday night. Brown currently sports a 3.52 ERA in 38.1 innings with 43 strike outs.
Netzel heating up.
Brad Netzel is currently working on a 13-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 26 of the team's past 28 games. He went 8-12 in the team's most recent series against Traverse City.
Walk this way.
Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 52 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 33 times in 285 at bats.
Error indicator.
Joliet is 11-35 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not make an error.
