Slammers Get Great Outing from McFarland and Win 7-1

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-defeated Windy City 7-1 as Kody McFarland pitched a gem at Standard Bank Stadium.

The Slammers struck first on a solo homer to right for Adam Giacalone to leadoff the second inning. It was his team-leading 10th home run of the season and 49th RBI. McFarland started for the Slammers and struck out five in the 1st three innings. He retired the first ten in a row and had a no-hitter through six innings. He had faced the minimum at that time, allowing one walk and that runner was erased on a double play. Joliet added to their 1-0 lead in the top of the 7th with four runs. Max Casper picked up an RBI single and Chris Epps added a 2-run single. Grant DeBruin's sacrifice fly made it 5-1. Former Lewis Flyers outfielder Andrew Brauer led off the bottom of the 7th for Windy City with a bloop single to shallow right field to end McFarland's no-hit bid. Ryan Soares then singled in Brauer to end the shutout as well. McFarland left the game after 7 2/3 innings. He allowed just one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk. McFarland threw 114 pitches, 74 of those for strikes. His 11 strikeouts are a personal and team-high for 2014. The Slammers added two more runs in the top of the 9th on RBI's from Matt Weaver on a single and DeBruin on a double. It was DeBruins's second double of the day. David Kubiak came on to get the final four outs. He retired the side with strikeouts in the 9th to preserve the 7-1 win. With the 11 strikeouts from McFarland and the three from Kubiak that meant ThunderBolts hitters k'd 14 times. Kubiak picks up his fourth save as he entered the game in the 8th with a four-run lead but the tying runner was in the on-deck circle. Joliet finished with 13 hits and catcher Adam Lewis had three singles. Weaver, Giacalone and DeBruin had two apiece. The win ends a Joliet three-game losing streak moves them out of last place in the division.

Joliet continues their weekend series at Windy City on Saturday at 6:05pm before returning home for a season-ending nine-game home-stand, beginning with a 2-dollar Tuesday on August 26th. Awareness Wednesday will be followed by a Thirsty Thursday that will also be JackHammers Day. So break out your old JackHammers gear and celebrate the beginnings of Pro Baseball in Joliet.
