River City Rascals News Release

The Rascals crashed the final Friday night home game of the year for Lake Erie, defeating the Crushers by a final of 5-0. Tommy Mendoza was spectacular for the River City Boys, tossing seven innings of shutout ball to earn his seventh win of the season.

The Rascals broke through in the top of the first. Eric Williams sent a ground rule double over the wall in right center off Crushers starter Zach Gordon. He would come in on a sacrifice fly by Saxon Butler to make it 1-0. The RBI was Butler's 71st of the season.

River City would add another in the second, with Steve Carrillo knocking in Jon Myers with an RBI groundout. Myers would knock in a run himself in the fourth and then come in again on an RBI single by Carrillo. The two of them accounted for three of the five runs driven in and three of the five runs scored by the Rascals.

Meanwhile, Mendoza continued to dazzle. The righthander mixed pitches and changed speeds on his way to seven strikeouts. His excellent control was on full display as well. Mendoza spotted pitches near-perfectly all night. The only walk he issued in the evening was to the first man he faced, Craig Hertler, but after that, he was finding only the strike zone.

Johnny Morales picked up an RBI on a base hit in the top of the seventh, and Mendoza finished his night by striking out Emmanuel Quiles swinging to end the bottom of the seventh. Chandler Jagodzinski took over from there. Jags allowed one hit but no runs in two innings of relief to finish off the shutout.

The victory was the third in a row for River City, who moved to a league-best twenty-one games over .500. Mendoza got the win in the contest, while Gordon got the loss. The River City Boys will remain in Lake Erie for two more. First pitch tomorrow night will be thrown at 7:05 ET/6:05 CT. Tim Koons is expected to start for the Rascals.
