Slammers Edge Grizzlies at Joliet in Series Opener

JOLIET, IL - Joliet scored four unanswered runs and rallied back from a two-run deficit to defeat the Grizzlies 4-2 Monday night at Silver Cross Field.

After three scoreless innings, Gateway (27-25) scored the game's first run in the fourth. Chris McClendon led off the inning with a single and scored all the way from first on a John Shelby RBI double to left center.

Jonathan Johnson led off the fifth with a double and came in to score on a Rogelio Norris RBI single, but that was all the scoring the Grizzlies would get. They stranded ten runners on base, including at least one in every inning except the sixth.

Joliet (23-29) got a run in the fifth on a Josh Lyon RBI double to make it a one-run game.

The score stayed 2-1 until the seventh when Joliet scored three runs on three hits and one error. Kyle Maunus led off the inning with a home run to tie the game and Brad Netzel put Joliet ahead on an RBI single.

Alex Kaminsky took the loss for Gateway. He surrendered three runs on five hits in six and one third. He walked three and struck out five. Zac Treece gave up one unearned run in one and two thirds.

Noris and Richie Jimenez Jr. both had three-hit games for the Grizzlies, who collected 12 hits as a team.

The Grizzlies and Slammers play game two of the series in Joliet Tuesday night. Right-hander Jonathan Gonzalez (1-2) will get the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT.
