London Rippers News Release

LONDON, ONTARIO - A hot start for the Southern Illinois Miners (31-21) gave them enough to stave off London (20-32), as the Rippers fall in game one of their series 5-4.

Southern Illinois exploded with a four run 1st inning off London starter, Jamie Richmond (5-3), capped off by a 2-run homer by Jake Kaase.

Richmond turned in a gutsy performance after that, finishing 8 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits, while walking 3 and striking out three.

" It was tough because of what happened in the first inning " Richmond said of his performance, " I kept battling after that and we got close, but it wasn't enough. "

After the 2nd inning, Richmond allowed only two hits and one walk.

London got one back in the bottom of the 1st on a throwing error by Miners' catcher, Matt Soderlund, allowing Stephen Cardullo to score after attempting to steal third.

A groundout by Joash Brodin in the 2nd, brought London closer, at 5-2 and his second RBI of the game came on a single in the 5th that scored Matt Wright, tightening the game to 5-3.

The chipping away continued in the 7th as Wright grounded out to second, which brought home David Christensen for the Rippers' fourth run.

Southern Illinois starter, Brian Fowler (4-4) gave up four runs and six hits in 7 innings of work. Albert Ayala completed the game with his 3rd save.

London and Southern Illinois meet tomorrow at 6:30pm for game two of this series. Matt Sommo (0-1 1.50) starts for the Rippers against Daniel Calhoun (2-1 5.12).
