Norfolk Tides News Release

June 7, 2006 - The Syracuse SkyChiefs knocked off the Norfolk Tides 5-1 Wednesday night, in a game shortened to eight and a half innings due to rain.

The start of the game was delayed by one hour and eight minutes due to rain, but the delay did not seem to effect the Tides as they jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Anderson Hernandez led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Jeff Keppinger, and came around to score one out later on a sacrifice fly by Michael Tucker.

The SkyChiefs tied the score in the second inning on an RBI single by Rob Cosby, then took the lead for good on a two-run single by Sergio Santos in the sixth inning.

Syracuse would add two runs on RBI base hits by Kevin Barker, as the designated hitter drove in a run with an RBI single in the 7th and an RBI double in the ninth.

Jason Scobie (1-8) suffered the loss for Norfolk, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Shaun Marcum (3-0) earned the win for Syracuse, retiring the final 15 batters he faced. Marcum pitched in place of David Purcey, who warmed up in the bullpen prior to the game, but did not pitch after the opening rain delay.

The game was also delayed for 25 minutes in the middle of the ninth inning before being called due to rain.

The Tides will take on the SkyChiefs again in the finale of an eight-game homestand Thursay afternoon. Dave Williams (1-1, 4.50) takes the hill for Norfolk against Syracuse right-hander Josh Towers (1-1, 3.21), with game time set for 12:15 p.m.
