Ft. Mill, SC - The Charlotte Knights beat the Richmond Braves 6-3 Wednesday at Knights Stadium. The Knights scored three first inning runs to beat the Braves for the second straight night.
Ernie Young doubled two runs home in the first to put the Knights in front to stay. Young later scored on a throwing error to make it 3-0. Ryan Sweeney homered in the third to give Charlotte a 4-0 lead. Richmond battled back in the fourth. Carlos Mendez chased a run home with a double and Bill McCarthy slapped an RBI single to cut the Knights lead to 4-2. Charlotte answered right back in the home half on an RBI single by Sweeney to bump their lead back to 5-2. Scott Thorman continued his torrid hitting with a sixth inning home run, his 14th, to again trim Charlotte's lead to two. The Knights added one more run in the eighth on an RBI ground ball b Jorge Velandia.
Heath Phillips earned the win. Jeff Farnsworth picked up a save. Ricardo Rodriguez took the loss. Mendez and McCarthy had two hits each for Richmond. Sweeney had three hits for the Knights.
The Braves and Knights close their series Thursday at 7:15. Richmond returns home June 13 vs. Louisville.
