IL1 Rochester Red Wings

Munro, Wings blank Bulls

June 7, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

Pete Munro tossed a complete game shutout, Garrett Jones hit a solo home run, and Jason Bartlett made a sensational game-ending play to lead the Red Wings to 1-0 win over the Durham Bulls Wednesday night at Frontier Field. The win was the seventh straight for first place Rochester; it's the longest win streak for the club since April 2004.

Jones picked up the Wings' first hit off Durham starter Mike Prohaska with a towering home run off the roof of The Nest picnic pavilion in right field. The homer was the ninth of the season for Jones, and his 41st RBI - both club highs. Jones entered the game tied with Durham's Elijah Dukes for second place in the league in RBI, behind Dukes' teammate Kevin Witt.

Munro worked around five hits in the first four innings, getting double play help in the second and helping himself in the fourth. He struck out Witt with a runner on base, allowed another hit, then got a strikeout and groundout to keep the Bulls scoreless. Munro repeated the same pattern with Durham in the fifth: single, out, single, out, out to preserve the Rochester lead at 1-0.

In the seventh, the Red Wings put a pair of runners on base with one out, and Tim Corcoran replaced Prohaska on the mound for Durham. Corcoran induced a double play ball from Luis Maza to get out of trouble.

Munro pitched eight scoreless innings, and went into the ninth looking for the team's first complete game shutout of the season. With one out Shawn Riggans laced a double to left field, then Munro retired Luis Rivas on a chopper in front of the mound for the second out. With the tying run on second, pinch-hitter B.J. Upton's ground ball in the hole was snagged on a brilliant backhand play from Jason Bartlett, who got up and threw out the speedy Upton at first to end the game. The play was so close that Upton followed the umpires toward the home plate gate while arguing, before being restrained by his manager John Tamargo.
