Sky Sox Take Wet One, 5-4

Though it took the Sky Sox 10 innings to dispatch of the Rainiers in each of their first two contests, the Sky Sox downed the Rainiers in a wet, six-inning game, 5-4, at Security Service Field. The home club rolling, Thursday night's win marked their fifth in their last six games .

Following a 1:19 deliberation in the bottom of the sixth, the officials called the match in favor of the Sky Sox, giving the Springs their third straight win over Tacoma, improving their record to 9-6.

After a hitless top of the first by Sox' starter Chaz Roe, the Sky Sox got out to an early 1-0 lead on the strength of a Cole Garner triple, his second in as many nights.

As the storm clouds rolled past Colorado Springs, the Rainiers put up two runs in the third, followed by one a piece in the fourth and fifth innings. Down 4-1 with dark skies overhead, the Sky Sox put together yet another timely rally in the bottom of the fifth.

Just two nights after sending Tuesday's match into extras with a ninth inning home run, third baseman Travis Metcalf got the action started with a line drive single to left. Consecutive bloop singles by Eric Young, Jr. and Cole Garner loaded the bases. Matt Miller, the next batter, launched a deep fly ball into the wind that carried further than expected, bouncing off the wall and resulting in only a single and one run. Metcalf scoring on the play, the Sox cut the deficit to two with the bases still loaded.

Though Brad Eldred struck out looking in the next at-bat, Jay Payton supplied the heroics with a bases clearing double that put the Sky Sox ahead 5-4. The inning ending after a Chris Frey pop up and Jonathan Herrera line out, the Sox got all the scoring they would need - just in the nick of time before the hail rained down on Security Service Field.

Chaz Roe (2-1) took the victory in the club's fourth straight one-run game and fifth win in six contests - only one of which were completed in regulation nine innings.

The two teams will face off tomorrow for the last time until June 14 as Sox ace Jhoulys Chacin (2-0, 2.25) takes on Tacoma righty David Pauley (0-2, 4.00).
