Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Colorado Springs used some nifty base running and six strong innings from Cedrick Bowers to run past the Express Friday night in front of 8,561 fans at Security Service Field Friday night.

Trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning, the Sky Sox pushed across runs in unusual fashion. Joe Koshansky used an extreme shift to his advantage with two outs and the bases loaded. The slugging first baseman hit a squib down the third base line, which banged off the bag and ricocheted past the third baseman who was running toward the line from the short stop position. Ian Stewart read the play immediately and never slowed down as he scored from second on what turned into a two-run scoring infield single. The Sky Sox would tie the game on the next at-bat when Edwin Bellorin's single plated Sean Barker.

Colorado Springs pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth inning thanks in part to a leadoff triple from Ian Stewart. Bellorin's two-run double scored Stewart and Koshansky, who was intentionally walked.

The night started a bit shaky for the Sky Sox, as Bowers allowed three runs in the second inning. The big lefty, making his first start of the season, quickly righted the ship and finished with six strikeouts and four walks before being relieved by Josh Newman (1-0). Newman's two scoreless innings were good enough to get the returning lefty his first win of the season for the Sky Sox. Steven Register pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

The Sky Sox begin a series with Albuquerque Saturday night at Security Service Field. Josh Towers (3-2, 6.16) is scheduled to take the hill for the Sky Sox while Frankie de la Cruz (4-1, 6.75) will get the call from the Isotopes. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
