Portland Beavers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Mike Aviles had three hits, Brian Buchanan drove in three runs and Angel Berroa hit a two-run double as the Omaha Royals beat the Portland Beavers 9-5 to earn a split in their four-game series Friday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Omaha's Kyle Davies (4-2) pitched six innings and gave up five hits, three walks and four runs, though only one was earned. Devon Lowery was credited with his first Triple-A save after working the last three innings.
Despite the loss, the Beavers, who were out-hit 13-7, have yet to lose a series at Rosenblatt Stadium, settling for two splits and winning three times - including two, four-game sweeps - to compile a 15-5 all-time record at the Royals' home stadium.
Brian Myrow hit a three-run double in the fifth, Edgar Gonzalez homered for the second game in a row and Chip Ambres clubbed his sixth home run of the season for Portland (17-16).
The Royals (17-16) scored in each of the first three innings to take a sizeable 8-1 lead.
Portland starter Cesar Ramos found trouble early, facing 10 batters and needing 46 pitches to get out of the first inning that saw the Royals break out to a 4-0 advantage. Berroa hit a two-run double and scored the final run of the rally after stealing third base and scoring on a throwing error by catcher Nick Hundley.
After Ambres hit a solo home run off Davies, Buchanan, a former Beaver, ripped a two-run double to left field in the bottom of the second and then scored on an RBI single by Damon Hollins to help the Royals build a 7-1 lead and chase Ramos (3-3).
The Royals got to Ramos, who turned in 1 2/3 innings, for seven runs, eight hits and four walks. Omaha added single runs in the third and sixth inning against the Beavers bullpen.
After the game, the Beavers traveled by bus to Des Moines, Iowa, where they will begin a four-game series with the Iowa Cubs Saturday night at 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).
