Iowa Cubs News Release
J.R. Mathis threw seven shutout innings as the Iowa Cubs rolled to their third consecutive win, defeating the Tacoma Rainiers 3-0 Friday night at Principal Park.
Mathis, who picked up his first win of the season, gave up only four hits on the night while striking out four. The left-hander didn't allow a Tacoma runner to reach third base and took only one Rainier hitter to a three-ball count on the night.
Iowa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Sam Fuld drove in Micah Hoffpauir and Josh Kroeger on a two RBI double to left field. The Cubs added their third and final run of the night when Matt Murton drove in Andres Torres with an RBI single over a drawn-in Tacoma infield. Torres, who finished the night 1-for-3 extended his league-leading hitting streak to 24 games with a lead-off single in the third inning. Iowa's offense tagged Tacoma starter Shawn White for eight hits in seven innings of work for the loss.
Murton, Hoffpauir, and Kroeger each had a pair of hits in the win. Reliever Mike Burns threw two perfect innings to pick up his first save of the season.
