
Padres Recall Jody Gerut, Purchase Contract Of Luke Carlin

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today recalled Portland outfielder Jody Gerut and requested unconditional release waivers on outfielder Jim Edmonds. Additionally, the Padres purchased the contract of Portland catcher Luke Carlin, optioned catcher Colt Morton to Class AA San Antonio and signed catcher Shawn Wooten as a minor league free agent and assigned him to Portland.
Gerut, 30, hit .308 (33-for-107) with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 18 RBIs, 22 runs scored, 13 walks and four stolen bases in 27 games for Portland. He was named the Pacific Coast League Batter of the Week for the span of April 28-May 4 when he batted .462 (12-for-26) with four home runs, seven RBIs and 13 runs scored. Gerut, who signed a minor league contract with San Diego on Jan. 27, made the Padres Opening Day roster as a non-roster invitee and went 1-for-6 with a stolen base in four games with the club before he was optioned to Portland on April 5.
In 324 career major League games over parts of four seasons with Cleveland (2003-05), Chicago Cubs (2005), Pittsburgh (2005) and San Diego (2008), he has batted .263 with 75 doubles, eight triples, 34 home runs, 140 RBIs, 153 runs scored and 109 walks.
Carlin, 27, batted .387 (12-for-31) with two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBIs, 15 walks and eight runs scored in 11 games with Portland. In 182 games played over three seasons with the Beavers (2006-08), Carlin, who has yet to play in the major leagues, has a .249 batting average, seven home runs and 57 RBIs. Carlin was named the Beavers Community Player of the Year in 2006 (with Justin Leone) and 2007.
Wooten, 35, rejoins the Padres organization after playing 29 games with Class AA San Antonio last season. He started the 2008 campaign with Triple-A New Orleans, batting .152 (5-for-33) with a double, one home run, two RBIs and four runs scored in 16 games with the Zephyrs before being released May 3.
Wooten, who was originally an 18th-round selection of the Detroit Tigers in the 1993 draft, made his major league debut with Anaheim in 2000 and spent parts of six seasons in the majors with the Angels (2000-03), Philadelphia (2004) and Boston (2005).
The Beavers' active roster now stands at 23 players.
