Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders avoided a being swept by the Nashville Sounds, beating the Sounds 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday night.

Josh Whitesell delivered a 1-out walkoff home run to rightfield off of Sounds reliever Jason Shiell to give the Sidewinders their first walkoff victory this season. Whitesell has gone yard in back-to-back games for Tucson.

Nashville's Ozzie Chavez put the first runs on the board with a triple to center scoring two runs for the Sounds. Tucson answered back in the fourth with two runs of their own coming off a Trent Oeltjen grounder scoring Trot Nixon from third and a Jesus Merchan sacrifice fly.

Tucson took the lead in the fifth inning when Trot Nixon hit his fifth home run of the season, which drove in three runs making it 5-2.

Nashville tied in the seventh when Russel Branyan hit a three run homer of his own off of Sidewinders reliever Emiliano Fruto.

The Sounds put a man on in the ninth with no outs. With the runner going second baseman Emilio Bonifacio made a quick flip on a grounder to shortstop Jesus Merchan who fired it on to first base for clutch 4-6-3 double play to preserve the tie.

The Sidewinders will host the Memphis Cardinals in Tucson starting at 6:30 PM on Saturday night. LHP Doug Davis (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start for Tucson on a Major League rehab assignment. Right-hander P.J. Walters (0-0, 3.60) will start for the Cardinals. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:20 a.m.
