Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Colorado Springs doubled up Portland 6-3 on Sunday afternoon behind solid pitching and timely hitting. Byung-Hyun Kim, Jorge De Paula (1-0), Josh Newman and Mike Gallo combined to limit the Beavers to just two hits and three unearned runs with De Paula picking up the win. Gallo pitched a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the year. Jared Wells (0-3) remained winless on the year after giving up six runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings.
The scoring for the Sox began in the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles off starter Wells by Cory Sullivan and Jayson Nix. Wells was able to get a fly out from Seth Smith and a strikeout of Ian Stewart but the red-hot Sean Barker came to up next and ripped an 0-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left-center field for his third dinger of the season to stake the Sky Sox to an early 3-0 lead.
Portland cut into the lead in the second with a sacrifice fly by Brett Dowdy that scored Jack Cust. Kim started the inning with two walks to Cust and Royce Huffman and moved the runners to second and third on a strikeout passed ball before Dowdy plated Cust.
In the third, the Sox put two more runs on the board to make it 5-1. Nix led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Smith and then trotted home as Stewart lifted a soft single to center over the drawn-in infield. The Sox then loaded the bases on a single by Barker and an intentional walk to Koshansky before Wells hit Alvin Colina with a pitch to force in the final run of the inning. Omar Quintanilla grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Sox continued the scoring barrage with another run in the fourth. With two outs, Nix collected his third hit of the game, a single to right, and then stole second. Smith then lined a single to center to make the score 6-1.
The Beavers cut the lead in half with two unearned runs in the seventh. With one out, reliever Jorge De Paula walked two batters and induced a groundball but it when through the legs of first baseman Koshansky and rolled all the way to the right field corner where the ball was misplayed again by the right fielder Smith. Two runners came around to score on the play but the Sox escaped further damage by striking out the next two batters.
Game three tomorrow night will feature LHP Eric DuBose (0-0, 5.79) for the Sox against RHP Cesar Carrillo (0-1, 9.00).
