Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A two-run home run by Kyle Skipworth in the bottom of the sixth was the difference as the Jacksonville Suns (29-24) won 3-2 over the Carolina Mudcats (16-37) at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Wednesday afternoon.

The two-run shot by Skipworth was his fourth of the year, and turned a 2-1 deficit into a Jacksonville 3-2 lead, which would be the final score.

After throwing a scoreless inning and a third in relief, Jhan Marinez (1-3) earned his first win of the year for the Suns. Marinez entered the game in the top of the sixth as he inherited the bases loaded with two outs, but he struck out pinch-hitter Quintin Berry swinging to end the frame and escape the jam with the Suns only trailing by a run.

The Suns took a 1-0 lead off Carolina starter Kyle McCulloch in the bottom of the fourth, as Luke Montz drove home Jim Negrych on an RBI double to put the Suns up 1-0.

After going five scoreless innings to start the game, Jacksonville starter Dallas Trahern allowed two runs to Carolina in the top of the sixth, as Cody Puckett hit an RBI double to tie the game and Felix Perez hit an RBI single to put Carolina on top 2-1. Carolina's lead was short-lived thanks to Skipworth's heroics in the bottom of the sixth to put the Suns back ahead 3-2.

Sandy Rosario pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the 3-2 win and pick up his Southern League-best 14th save of the season.

With the win, the Suns now own a half game lead on both the Birmingham Barons and Mobile BayBears in the South Division standings with only 17 games left in the first half. The BayBears can tie the Suns in the standings later tonight with a victory against Mississippi.

The clubs will play the fourth game of the series on Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds. Left-hander Brad Hand (6-1, 3.63 ERA) will start for Jacksonville while Carolina will start right-hander James Avery (3-6, 4.53 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and fans can listen to the game beginning at 6:50 p.m. on with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
