Lancaster Stormers News Release
James Skelton singled to left to drive in Nate Spears in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Somerset Patriots to a 2-1 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Thursday evening at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ.
The win completed a sweep of the Barnstormers, who have now lost nine of their last 10 games.
Spears led off the bottom of the 10th with a line drive single to right off left-hander Bryan Morgado (0-2). After a strikeout of former Oriole Robert Andino, Spears stole second. He rode home when Skelton, like Spears a left-handed batter, punched a 2-2 pitch into left center.
Prior to that, neither side generated much offense.
Somerset scored off Bryan Evans in the first inning on a walk to leadoff man Jonny Tucker, a solid two-out hit to right by Chris Marrero and David Vidal's blooper which fell into shallow right field to knock home the run.
Lancaster countered with a bizarre run in the second. Lance Zawadzki reached on an infield single to start the inning. With one out, he stole second and sprinted to third when Skelton's throw skipped into center field. Kevin Rivers struck out, but the pitch got away from Skelton. Zawadzki beat Skelton's throw back to Randy Boone covering the plate. Boone tried to fire to first and get Rivers, but his throw sailed down the right field line, allowing Rivers to scamper all the way to third.
Lancaster hit two ground balls never scoring the run. The Barnstormers managed only two hits, singles by Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Tyler Bortnick, the rest of the night and sent the minimum of 24 batters to the plate over the final eight innings.
Meanwhile, the Barnstormers staff combined to strike out 13 Somerset batters, including a season-high eight by Evans. The Patriots managed only three hits from innings two thru nine.
The Barnstormers will entertain the Long Island Ducks on Friday evening. Dan Osterbrock (1-1) will make the start for Lancaster against right-hander Mark Rogers (1-1). Fireworks will follow the game and the first 1,000 fans will receive "Star Wars" light sabers, courtesy of Pyrotechnico.
NOTES: Cavazos-Galvez extended his hitting streak to eight games...Lancaster managed only 12 runs on 34 hits over the final 57 innings of the seven-game road trip...Earlier in the day, the Barnstormers signed center fielder Chevy Clarke, a former first round pick of the Los Angeles Angels.
