Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas. - The Sugar Land Skeeters claimed game one of the double-header with York, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Constellation Field. The win improves the Skeeters' win-streak to eight-games and improves the record to 26-23 while York falls to 18-30.
Like the night before, the Skeeters wasted no time in scratching across the first run of the game. Willy Taveras opened the home half of the first with a single into center. Travis Scott pulled York starter, Logan Williamson's full-count offering through the right-side to allow Taveras to advance to third. Delwyn Young drove Taveras in with a fielder's choice, staking Sugar Land to a 1-0 advantage.
York tagged Skeeters' starter Matt Wright for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Bryan Pounds led off with a single into center before Andres Perez knocked a ground-rule double over the wall in right to move two runners into scoring position. Following a popup near the third base bag, Nick Ferdinand reached on a passed ball after chasing a pitch up in the strike zone for strike three. With the ball caroming off Scott's glove behind the plate, Pounds was able to race home and tie the game at one. Brandon Boggs singled through the left-side of the infield, plating Perez from third and giving York a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
Sugar Land utilized Williamson's lack of control in the fourth inning to push across the equalizer. Patrick Palmeiro drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Following a Denny Almonte walk, Amadeo Zazueta picked up right where he left off from last night's 4-for-4 performance with an RBI single through the right-side of the infield to tie the game.
The Revolution came back around to reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth. Wilson Valdez singled over the head of Dustin Martin at first before Perez drew a walk. Shannon Wilkerson singled into left-center with two outs, bringing Valdez across the plate for the go-ahead run, 3-2.
The Skeeters kept buzzing around in the bottom of the fifth. Russo singled just to the right of shortstop after Young lifted a long single down the line in left. Dustin Martin singled in his return to the lineup after a three-game hiatus, picking up an RBI on his base knock up the middle, tying the game at three.
With help from an error by the York shortstop, the Skeeters reclaimed the lead heading into the final inning of the opening contest of the double-header. Zazueta blasted a double down the right-field line. Taveras followed with a single to short, but an errant throw to first allowed Zazueta to score and give Sugar Land a 4-3 lead.
Derrick Loop came in to pitch the seventh and saw his streak end after a one-out walk. The southpaw had retired 29-straight batters over his previous nine appearances. Loop eventually picked off Pounds from first before striking out the game's final batter to close out the win.
