Revs Suffer Pair Of One-Run Defeats In Texas Twinbill

York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution dropped a pair of close contests to the Sugar Land Skeeters in Saturday's doubleheader, losing by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 in front of 5,624 fans at Constellation Field. The Revs will look to snap their losing streak and avoid a sweep in Sunday's series finale at 6:05 p.m. eastern.

The opener was a back-and-forth affair that featured two York leads.

Sugar Land scored in the bottom of the first inning on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Delwyn Young for a quick 1-0 advantage.

York went in front with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bryan Pounds led off with a single to center and Andres Perez cracked a ground-rule double to deep right. With one out, Pounds came home on a passed ball that occurred on a strikeout of Nick Ferdinand who reached first base on the play. Brandon Boggs then slapped an RBI single to left, putting the Revs ahead 2-1.

Sugar Land scored in each of its final three offensive innings, however, twice erasing York leads. With two outs and no runners in the fourth, Patrick Palmeiro worked a walk and advanced two bases on a wild pitch and a passed ball. Denny Almonte then walked, ending the afternoon of starter Logan Williamson. Amadeo Zazueta greeted reliever Brad Bergesen by serving an RBI single through the right side, plating Palmeiro to tie the score at 2-2.

The Revs went back ahead in the fifth as Shannon Wilkerson ripped a two-out RBI single to left for a 3-2 lead.

Again, Sugar Land answered in its half of the frame. Young singled to left field with one out, and with two away Kevin Russo kept the inning alive with a soft single to left off the end of the bat. Dustin Martin then bounced an RBI single up the middle against reliever Leyson Septimo, tying the score at 3-3.

The Skeeters plated the decisive run an inning later as Zazueta slapped a double down the right field line with one out and scored as shortstop Wilson Valdez' throw to first on a Willy Taveras infield single sailed high, bringing Zazueta home on the error.

Both bullpens factored in the decisions as Skeeters reliever Ramon Delgado (1-0) picked up the win after a scoreless sixth. Derrick Loop notched his third save with a scoreless seventh, despite a one-out walk to Pounds ending his streak of 29 consecutive hitters retired.

York's Nick Mutz (0-1) suffered the loss, charged with the unearned run in the sixth.

The nightcap remained scoreless into the bottom of the fourth when the Skeeters manufactured a pair of runs. Taveras drew a leadoff walk and after running on a pitch, was nearly retired at second on a ground ball back to the mound but barely beat the throw at second base to avoid a double play. Taveras advanced to third on a line out to center by Young and scored as Jeremy Barfield chopped a two-out single into left for the game's first run. Travis Scott kept the inning alive by slapping a single to left, and Russo doubled the damage with a bloop single to left off the end of the bat, plating Barfield to make it 2-0.

The Revs landed a runner in scoring position to lead off each of the final three innings but were only able to score one run.

Ferdinand reached second on an error by Martin at first base to begin the fifth, but Skeeters starter Derek Blacksher (2-2) retired the final three batters to finish five scoreless innings and earn the win, allowing only two total hits.

Starlin Rodriguez led off the sixth with a line drive to right that Russo lost sight of, resulting in a triple. Boggs followed with a sacrifice fly to left, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Ferdinand greeted closer John Lujan with a triple to right-center to begin the seventh, but with the infield in, was unable to score after hesitating on a bloop single to center by Johan Limonta. Lujan retired Steve Proscia and Salvador Paniagua on pop ups before pinch-runner Sean Smith was caught stealing in a rundown to end the game before Ferdinand was able to cross the plate. Lujan picked up his fifth save, hanging on for the nailbiter.

Revs starter Shawn Hill (1-6) suffered the loss despite pitching well, allowing just two runs on four hits in five innings. He walked only one and struck out four.

The loss marked a season-high-tying sixth straight defeat for the Revs, while the Skeeters have now won nine in-a-row. York has dropped seven of eight to Sugar Land over the last two series, now 3-8 against the Skeeters on the season.

York righty Anthony Lerew (3-1, 3.70) will face Sugar Land right-hander Shane Loux (2-2, 2.47) in Sunday's series finale. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 5:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
