Skeeters Sign Former Astro Willy Taveras

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS - The Sugar Land Skeeters and manager Gary Gaetti announced the signing of Willy Taveras prior to the contest with York. The outfielder helped the Houston Astros to a World Series appearance in 2005 and brings seven years of Big League experience to the Skeeters.

Taveras, 33, led the National League in stolen bases in 2008 with 68 and led Major League Baseball in singles in 2005 with 152 base knocks. The outfielder spent time with the Astros (three seasons), Rockies (two seasons), Reds (one season) and Nationals (one season). A career .274 hitter at the Big League level, Taveras swiped 195 bags in his seven year career. In his 11 years in the minors, Taveras owns a .285 career average, with 37 triples and 306 stolen bases. He has spent time in the Indians, Astros, Rangers, Braves, Rockies and Royals farm systems and has played the last two years in the Mexican League with Puebla.

The Skeeters continue the 2015 campaign against York this weekend.
