Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS- The Sugar Land Skeeters snapped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night with a 6-3 win over the Camden Riversharks at Constellation Field in front of 3,542 fans. Matt Maloney became the first Skeeters' starter to earn a win this season, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks. The right-hander struck out five in the win.

Travis Scott paced the offense at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Denny Almonte drove in a pair on a home run in the first.

After scoring just five runs in the past two games, Sugar Land took advantage of Camden starter Sean Gleason's control issues. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Scott ripped Gleason's full-count offering into the right-center alley. Almonte followed by pulling a first pitch fastball off the Bud Light Ice House in right-center field for a two run blast.

Camden cut into the lead in the top of the second, thanks in part to a Skeeters' error. Joel Guzman legged out an infield single and an errant throw from shortstop, Beamer Weems, allowed the inning's leadoff man to reach second. Mike Costanzo followed with a slow roller to the right of the mound for the inning's second-straight infield single. Jose Gil launched a deep fly ball to left, allowing Guzman to score from third, but Costanzo was doubled up after wandering too far off first. Maloney then struck out Michael Rockett to end the threat.

The Skeeters pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the third. Dustin Martin went the other way for a single to left and Weems followed with a shot over the shortstop, allowing Martin to go first to third. Scott hit a frozen rope into center to score Martin and give the Skeeters a 3-1 lead.

After Camden manufactured a run on a wild pitch to move the score to 3-2, Sugar Land scratched across a run of its own in the fifth. Weems kicked off the inning with a double off the wall in left before scoring on Scott's third hit and second RBI of the night.

The Skeeters expanded the lead to 5-2 in the seventh. After Scott reached for the third time of the night, this time via an error, Almonte was hit by Eric Kline's offering to move the Skeeters' first baseman into scoring position. Chris Wallace continued his hot start with a single into center. After a strikeout, Patrick Palmeiro drew a four-pitch walk to plate Scott for his first RBI on the season.

Camden hung around with the Skeeters over the final two innings. John Lujan gave up a solo home run to Jeremy Barfield to move the score to 5-3. Sugar Land got the run back in the bottom half of the inning after a hit-by-pitch, single, walk and wild pitch.

Adrian Martin came in for the ninth and earned his third save of the season after inducing three-straight groundouts following a leadoff double.
