Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - The Visalia Rawhide (50-28, 4-4) doubled up the San Jose Giants (41-36, 2-6) 12-6 in the opener of the four game series between the North Division rivals at Recreation Ballpark on Thursday.
It was a sloppy game for the San Jose Giants defensively after they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against RHP Ethan Elias. San Jose went on to commit one error in each of the first four innings and then a fifth error in the eighth frame.
Elias pitched only one inning and gave up two hits and one run (earned) on one walk and he struck out one batter.
The Rawhide offense courtesy of the miscue in the bottom of the first took a 2-1 lead when SS Robleys Reyes singled and stole his way to third base. Two batters later 1B Marty Herum doubled home Reyes to tie the game before scoring himself when 2B Henry Castillo reached on the error for the 2-1 lead. Herum now has an RBI in four straight contests.
RHP Jency Solis (1-0, 7.32) entered and gave up a run in the second when CF Ronnie Jebavy knocked in RF Christian Paulino to knot it at 2-2.
1B Jonah Arenado hit solo home run in the third against Solis to reclaim the lead for San Jose, his eighth home run of the season.
In the bottom of third the flood gates opened against LHP Mark Reyes (6-3, 4.56), who got no help from his defense. The Rawhide scored six runs in the inning with RF Stryker Trahan driving in two with a single, C Michael Perez driving in two with a single And Roblelys Reyes and CF Colin Bray each driving in a run apiece.
Mark Reyes didn't survive the frame, pitching just 2.1 innings and allowing eight hits and eight runs (seven earned), he walked one and struck out one in the loss.
When the dust settled it was 8-3 Rawhide. Solis set a new season high with three-plus innings on the mound but he ran out of gas in the fifth. He allowed the first four straight men to reach base with DH Dylan Davis hitting a two-run home run to make it an 8-5 game. Arenado and 3B Jose Vizcaino Jr. followed with doubles and the RBI double by Vizcaino Jr. made it 8-6 Rawhide.
Solis earned the win for his three-plus innings of work, allowing five runs (earned) on eight hits and one strikeout.
RHP Miller Diaz followed with two shutout innings and then RHP Cameron Gann pitched two scoreless innings.
In the bottom of the eighth against RHP Pat Young the Rawhide hammered the nail in the coffin, scoring four more runs on a couple of walks, an RBI fielder's choice, another error, an RBI groundout and a Trahan RBI single for the 12-6 final.
LHP Will Locante entered and pitched a one, two, three ninth to close out the series opening victory.
The Rawhide are now 9-4 against San Jose this season including 6-1 at Recreation Ballpark against their North Division rival. Tomorrow night in game two of the series the Rawhide will send LHP Cody Reed (0-3, 4.01) to the mound against RHP Jason Forjet (7-5, 4.56) of San Jose. First pitch at 7:00 p.m. and it's a Fun-Filled Friday presented by Suncrest Bank and a night to celebrate expectant mothers with our Red, White and Due promotion.
